Apurva on ‘The City that Never Sleeps’
“There is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless”
– Simone de Beauvoir
When I was asked to write about my visit to New York City, I realised that this city doesn’t need much of an introduction these days. Visitors to New York have the world at their fingertips, from uptown to downtown and beyond. Every day presents something new to discover and constantly reminds me of what a great place this city is. One can without hesitation say that New York City is one of the greatest cities in the world.
This is a glimpse of my New York City, places that are close to my heart, what I admire most about the city and what it means to me. The city is larger than life : in sophistication, culture, food, art and entertainment and of course in population !
New York resonates with history. There is an incredibly diverse range of things to see and do but there are a few attractions like no other- The statue of liberty, Ellis Island, Wall Street, Fifth Avenue, Central Park, Broadway, The Apple Store and Times Square etc… The best way to get to these places is to take the train (subway). Subways are the fastest and easiest way to get around the city but I feel walking is the best way to get the feel of this place and to understand the personality of Manhattan.
Whether you are a local New Yorker or curiously breezing through town on a visit, Central Park is a place worth visiting . This place is a personal favourite too ! When you think about New York in summertime, you’d be hard pressed to find a more iconic image than sitting in Central Park with the sounds of music wafting through the air. The park is home to a ton of attractions spread over acres of landscape. Although I did not walk through the whole park, I got to see everything from the sprawling waters and stunning bridges to the green meadows and performance centres. Of course , above all this, the Central park is not an ‘attraction’ in the normal sense of the word. It is the calming serenity that the picturesque beauty and the natural greens that the Central Park provides to one of the busiest cities in the world. There is nothing better than wandering through the paths of the park, exploring the rustic spaces and basking in the nature on a Sunday evening !
“Drink, and dance and laugh and lie, Love the reeling midnight through,
For tomorrow we shall die!”- Dorothy Parker
New York is the best pick for all those who would like to experience an unmatchable and incredibly thrilling nightlife experience. Despite the city becoming more respectable for tourists , New York is still chock full of the sinful delirium that we all know and love. Virtually every band that steps foot in the United States plays some dates in or around New York and the City’s clubs have a history of discovering and showcasing new acts. This amazing city is home for some of the top night clubs in the world that become the hive of irresistible action that dazzles one and all with great music, dance and delicious food.
No matter what your age, background or interests are, it is easy to find something to love about this city. The greatest thing about this city is that only the best can make it here, because the best is what you’ll get. This is my second visit to this wonderful city and I can say that no two visits will ever quite be the same. That is what make me proud of this vibrant and eclectic city (and why you should visit as soon as possible! 😛 )
As I look out of the window of my bus, I see the lights and the skyline and the people on the street rushing around and looking for action, love, and the world’s greatest chocolate chip cookie, my heart does a little dance. As Ayn Rand once said,”I would give the greatest sunset in the world for one sight of New York’s skyline. Particularly when one can’t see the details. Just the shapes and the thought that made them”
